Some New Features
« on: July 10, 2011, 07:49:22 PM »
Hi, all.  I've just performed a major update to the software backend behind this forum.  Hopefully you'll notice some improvements here and there.  Please clear your cache by clicking SHIFT + REFRESH.

You'll notice a new feature here or there, but the most useful is the new "drafts" feature.  As you'd guess, it allows you to save a draft of the post you're working on to the server before actually posting it.  Also, you'll notice your posts are automatically saved to "drafts" every 30 seconds while working on them.  Access your saved drafts by clicking profile/profile info/show posts/drafts.  Drafts are removed when you post them.  Nobody can see your drafts but you.  Pretty handy, eh?  I know some of you, myself included, would have benefited greatly from this feature in the past.

Also, you can now export your personal messages to a downloadable .XML file.  I implemented this feature because while I do recommend that you purge your PM inbox from time to time for security reasons, I also realize you might not actually want to LOSE all of your private messages.

I have also removed the ability of users to change the subject of a thread they are posting in.  This will help to preserve the intent of threads you create.

There's also now a Facebook "Like" button on the first post of each thread.  Yeah, I know.  Please consider clicking it from time to time if you are a Facebook user.  It'll help drive some traffic our way.

There is now a floating "Back To Top" button in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Thumbs up here, too.  Some kick-ass major improvements without that "slap-in-the-face-we're-fixin'-it-for-ya" kind of attitude.

Thank you, Michael V!!

PS:  And I'm old(-er) and I usually HATE change! :P

i have disabled the auto-save feature for drafts.  it doesn't appear to be working correctly, and i don't want users to be fooled into depending on it.  however, the "save as draft" button DOES work correctly, and will remain in place.

cheers!

Sometimes the most important aspects of a subject are not immediately obvious. Keep reading to get the complete picture. When word gets around about your command of New Features facts, others who need to know about New Features will start to actively seek you out.

I'm starting a MLM pyramid scheme called "New Features."
It will be completely new.
And it will have lots of features.

i have enabled the "buddy list" feature.  it's described here:
http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=207.0

however, the real reason why i enabled the buddy list is because it ALSO enables the ignore list.  with it, you can ignore users whose posts and private messages you don't want to see.  i think that's a sweet option for users to have.  it's all managed through the "your profile" link in the menu.

the ignore list will prevent SO MANY moderation problems going forward because if people complain to me about someone, i can tell them to place the user on their ignore list.  absolutely no involvement required on my part.  that's always a nice thing.
